Natural Dyes for Coloring Wood and Varnishes in Violin Making
Our natural dyes are made from purely plant-based or animal-derived materials and naturally color wood and varnishes. They preserve the natural wood grain and create a warm, vibrant color effect. The dyes can be easily incorporated into varnishes and color the wood, making them suitable for both subtle accents and an even coloring. Ethanol (Alcohol) 99%
This 99% pure alcohol (denatured with 1% MEK) is ideally suited for dissolving natural resins themselves. This high-quality alcohol ensures the solution has no white gumming (streaks). We also recommend out 99% ethanol for spirit soluble powder colours. For varnishing we recommend approximately 300g-400g resin to 1 litre ethanol. ATTENTION - The 10 liter canister can only be shipped in Germany.
Cochineal, red
Cochineal – Natural Colorant for Violin Making Cochineal is a traditional natural colorant that has been used in violin making for centuries to prepare color extracts and wood stains. Obtained from the cochineal insect, it produces brilliant red and purple shades and is ideal for the individual coloring of stringed instruments. For spirit varnishes, cochineal is extracted with alcohol. The filtered color extract can then be added to spirit varnish in the desired amount. Cochineal can also be extracted with water and used as a wood stain. Add the resulting color extract to the spirit varnish until the desired color intensity is achieved. As a wood stain: Extract the cochineal with water and apply the filtered solution directly to the prepared wood. The final color depends on the concentration, the wood surface, and the number of applications. Delivery form: Dried whole cochineal insects.
